God’s Outrageous Claims

by Lee Strobel

The author of three Case for... books turns to something a little different in this volume. This book focuses on thirteen different Bible claims that, from a human perspective, often seem outrageous.

From the back: “Take the Bible seriously and you’ll discover that God makes some pretty amazing claims about you—and about what he wants you to do in your life. God’s Outrageous Claims examines important assertions that can transform your life in to an adventure of faith, growth, and lasting fulfillment.”

The “Outrageous Claims” that Strobel examines:

  • There’s freedom in forgiving your enemies
  • You can even learn to forgive yourself
  • You can survive the rat race without becoming a rat
  • You can make a difference that will last for eternity
  • God can give you power as power is needed
  • You gain when you give yourself away
  • A dose of doubt may strengthen your faith
  • God has a cure for your secret loneliness
  • God’s rules on sex can liberate us
  • Random acts of kindness aren’t enough
  • Heaven is more than wishful thinking
  • Jesus is the only path to God
  • Playing it safe is the most dangerous way to live

Because of the nature of the book, you can read the chapters individually, or out of order, without losing anything. Each chapter stands on its own and is its own study. As is the case in such books, some of the chapters are better than others. But, overall, every chapter was worth reading.

This isn’t the best book that I’ve ever read, but it was a good book. Don’t feel compelled to drop everything that you’re doing, rush out to get it, and move it to the top of your reading list. But, if you see it somewhere for a good price, go ahead and grab it. And when you find time to read it, you’ll find that it was worth the time you gave it.
