Preaparing the Young Man to Preach: Helping Young Preachers Do the Work of an Evangelist

by Berry Kercheville

"Anyone who is serious about preparing himself to preach the gospel should sit up and take note of this material! This is an insightful and much needed bookt hat offers tremendous 'how to' suggestions regarding the preparation and development of the preacher of the gospel in our culture." --David Thomley

"[This] book tests a man's heart to see if his motivations are in keeping with God's intentions for an evanglesit. It gets down to the nitty-gritty of the work of preaching, and spares nothing. It is obvious that Berry has a deep insight into the nature of the preacher's work. I believe he has captured the essence of Gospel preaching." --Barry Hudson

"It seems to me that it would be extremely beneficial for elders and members in general to read Berry Kercheville's profound observations on preaching. The book will help anyone get a grasp on the real work of evangelists. In fact, it is probably the most practical look at the day-to-day work of the preacher to come along in a long time." --Brent Lewis

For the most part, I would agree with the assessment provided by the three preachers above. Kercheville's volume on being a preacher is at once valuable to read and easy to read. The suggestions he makes are practical and he shapes his advice around the Bible's expectation of an evangelist rather than the brethren's expectations of an evangelist.

Most of what he writes doesn't serve as a how-to manual on pulpit preaching. Rather, his observations and advice serves to inform young men as to the work of a preacher when he isn't in the pulpit. There is also other practical advice that is valuable for anyone thinking of preaching: planning your week and setting up a pay/benefits package are two that come to mind.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is thinking about doing the work of a preacher or anyone who has recently gotten themselves into the evangelism. It would also serve well as a supplement to any preacher training program.
