Rumors of Another World: What On Earth are We Missing?by Philip YanceyFrom the dust jacket: “In Rumors of Another Word, Philip Yancey asks, ‘Is the visible world around us all there is?” and “What rumors of another world might it convey?’ He then examines the apparent contradictions. If this is God’s world, why doesn’t it look more like it? Why is this planet so messed up? Finally, the book considers how two world—the visible and invisible, natural and supernatural—might interact and affect our daily lives. Throughout, Yancey invites readers to explore the difference the answers make in coming to grip with our lives.” Rumors was a good read, but I found it less encouraging and thought-provoking than any of Yancey’s other books I have read. It was a quick read, with nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout the pages; however, having read some of Yancey’s books that were close to pure gold, scattered nuggets left me wanting more. The various chapters and topics were typically interesting, but I often found myself wondering what some of the subjects had to do with “Rumors of Another World”—either I didn’t quite understand Yancey’s thesis, or he wandered from time to time. Overall, I would say that Rumors is probably worth the time to read, but I wouldn’t recommend you rearrange your reading list to move it to the top or immediately getting on Amazon to track down a copy.
