The Truth War: Fighting for Certainty in an Age of Deception

by John MacArthur
From the back:

“There is no middle ground—no safe zone for the uncommitted in this war. The battle for truth is raging, and this book reveals:

- The pitfalls of postmodern thinking
- Why the Emerging Church Movement is inherently flawed
- Past skirmishes in the Truth War and their effect on the Church
- The importance of truth and certainty in a postmodern society
- How to identify and address the errors of false teaching smuggled into churches.”

In this volume, MacArthur goes about his task of dismantling postmodernism and the Emerging Church Movement by following the epistle of Jude. He also quotes heavily from Brian McLaren (a leader in the emerging church) and comparing his clearly-postmodern notions with the clear teachings of the Bible. Essentially, this book teaches that there is such a thing as objective truth, there are such things as false teachers, and we need to be fighting for the truth and against false teaching—no matter how out-of-season it may seem in modern culture.

Overall, this book was a worthwhile read. That he relied so heavily on Jude (rather than just sounding off based on his personal opinions or merely philosophizing) increased the value of it. If you’re not familiar with the Emerging Church Movement or are unsure of what exactly postmodernism is, this book would be a good foot-in-the-door for you to get a better understanding of those things. If you’re already well-versed in those things, you probably don’t need to rush out to get this one.
